Netherlandish artist, Gerard David, created this masterpiece (ca. 1485-1490) of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata. While Saint John is frequently depicted within Netherlandish art, the addition of Saint Francis was considered rare. The Lamb of God in Saint John's arms and Saint Francis receiving the stigmata shows that they were designed with a theme of Christs' Sacrifice in mind.
